Centennial Drive

Here in Matamata, we have a lovely walk that was set up in 1940 for the centennial celebrations. There are lovely mature trees growing there and most of them have a label so you know what type of  tree it is.
When we lived here before it was where I always walked the dog. They are allowed off the lead in this area, so they enjoyed running around free and checking out all the pmail.
I took some pictures when I walked through the other day. It is quite stark at the moment as all the leaves have gone. I will take some more in the spring time.
Wiremu Tamihana's totara tree

This tree was planted as a memorial to Wiremu Tamihana. He was the "King Maker" and friend of Josiah Firth, one of the first settlers here in Matamata. He was the first Christian chief of the Ngati-Haua.

This oak was planted as a memorial to Josiah Firth. He was the founder of the Matamata estate and of the first European settlement of the district in 1865.
